1 Billion Peoples’ Interests Now Tracked by AddThis

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market marshall kirkpatrick Tags:#Data Services#web Related Posts AddThis, one of the leading link sharing services used by sites all around the web (including this one), announced today that it now offers publishers information about the types of interests their readers and content sharers have demonstrated on the other sites they have visited. The company says it sees 1 billion unique people every month, a very substantial portion of the internet, and tracks their interests with cookies.Privacy-first advocates may raise concerns about tracking like this, but for publishers interested in learning more about their audiences and the people who help distribute their content, the information could prove quite valuable. Unfortunately, the interests exposed right now are fairly general (music, education) and available only through a dashboard view to publishers. If that data were to be made available programmatically, through an Application Programming Interface (API), then some really interesting recommendations and other services could be built on top of it.We interviewed Hooman Radfar, CEO of AddThis partent company ClearSpring, about all this kind of data in March of 2009. He said at the time that an API could be coming soon. It’s still not here and today he said that was because of the overwhelming commercial interest in the company’s existing products. Will the company now start to focus on an API? ” In future releases, we will not only show more granular interests, but also make the information available in different ways like APIs, widgets, etc.,” Radfar told us today.Marketers Will Eat EverythingWe wrote about AddThis competitor ShareThis in February, 2009 and asked that company how it planned to relate to its data.I asked [CEO Tim] Schigel whether ShareThis would be sharing this kind of data it collects, in aggregate, with marketers. “That’s ultimately where we go with the business model,” he said. The company is talking with selected marketers about sharing access to market insights now, but Schigel emphasized that a few conditions needed to be respected. “We need to make sure that publishers can build trust with their readers,” he said, “and we need something unique that marketers can’t get elsewhere.”ShareThis has offered an API for some time, but that API appears to be write-only, allowing outside developers to change the way their websites share information on the platform. Can We Move Beyond Marketing?Sources of Value Beyond MarketingData as PlatformRecommendationVisualizationAnalytics, optimization, monitoring & thresholdsPattern detection for discovery of new marketsSecurityHistorical archiving. Hopefully the startup ecosystem will figure out how to monetize on the fascinatingopportunities presented by all this data – in a way that genuinely adds value to the lives of end users too (those of us who produced the data). Some of those uses will no doubt be in marketing, and that’s great, but hopefully many will go beyond that most obvious use-case for the data. Ahead of Messi’s Kolkata game, hoardings show Paraguay team instead of Venezuela

first_imgEven as Kolkata geared up for the much-awaited friendly football match between two South American rivals — Argentina and Venezuela — an embarrassing organisational goof-up has dampened the build-up to the historic game.Hoardings across the city advertising the game carried pictures of the Paraguay team instead of Venezuela. The Paraguay team in the red and white jersey, instead of Venezuela in their all red kit, have been depicted next to the Argentine team.Surprisingly, the organisers — Celebrity Management Group — denied any wrongdoing on their part. They blamed the website from where they downloaded the images. They claimed the official website of Venezuela football carried these pictures so they used them on the hoardings. While the organisers hide behind flimsy excuses, the Venezuelan team were remarkably unruffled by the goof-up.Venezuela coach Cesar Farias said, “It’s a normal situation because we are traditionally called Cinderella team in South America, referring to a team who has less possibilities. Some of these situations where we are not taken seriously are because Argentina are shown a lot of importance.”The Venezuelans might have chosen to overlook the error, but ahead of a football game of such historic importance to India the mistake reflects poorly on a nation looking to improve its standing in the world of football.last_img read more

Pens Hand Isles 1st Loss, 3-1

first_imgPITTSBURGH — The much-maligned Pittsburgh Penguins’ penalty killers provided the lift needed to back up an already-sizzling power play. The Penguins killed a lengthy 5-on-3 just minutes before Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist scored power-play goals 55 seconds apart in the second period, helping Pittsburgh hand the New York Islanders their first loss of the season, 3-1 on the night of Oct. 18.“They took some heat the last three games, but certainly tonight they came through big time,” Penguins coach Mike Johnston said of the penalty killers. “That was the turning point in the game, that 5-on-3 kill.”The Islanders (4-1), who came up empty during a 5-on-3 of their own in the second, were the Eastern Conference’s last unbeaten team.“If you go back and look at our record when we don’t score a 5-on-3 goal, it’s not good,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. “We didn’t capitalize on ours, and obviously they did. That’s the difference in the game.”Hornqvist, who assisted on Malkin’s goal, added an empty-net tally with 1:20 left to seal the Penguins’ win. It is the first time Hornqvist has opened a season with points in four straight games. He has a total of eight points.Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby had two assists, including the 500th of his career. He joined Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr as the only Penguins with 500 assists, and he is the sixth-fastest to do it in NHL history.Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves as Pittsburgh recorded its fourth straight win over the Islanders and the eighth in nine meetings.Thomas Hickey staked the Islanders to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but New York failed to post its first 5-0 start. Jaroslav Halak stopped 35 shots. The Penguins’ penalty-killing unit, which ranked last in the league, went 6-for-6 and came up with two key third-period stops to protect a one-goal lead. That wasn’t the case Oct. 16 when Dallas scored the winning, power-play goal with 2.9 seconds left. The Penguins fended off the hard-charging Islanders, who nearly tied the game midway through the final period.“I thought our penalty killers battled hard,” Johnston said. “(The Islanders) have a very good power play, but our penalty killers were outstanding.”And they needed to be.The game was a matchup between the NHL’s top two power-play units and bottom two penalty-killers.Pittsburgh entered with the best power play and worst penalty kill. The Islanders were second with the man advantage and 29th when short-handed.The teams combined for eight penalties in 9:32 in the second period, starting with the Penguins, who committed four penalties in 3:21. Pittsburgh killed the Islanders’ two-man advantage that spanned 1:26.“The power play was ugly,” Islanders captain John Tavares said. “The second half of the game, we didn’t generate much. We tried to mix things up, and it just seemed for whatever reason, we just weren’t sharp.”The Penguins got the next two-man advantage after Cory Conacher was called for hooking, and the Islanders were then caught with too many men on the ice.Malkin tied it 1-1 at 13:49 when he put in a wrist shot from the left point, and then fired a drive that Hornqvist tipped past Halak with 5:16 left in the second.“When you get a 5-on-3 like we had right after theirs, those are turning points,” Johnston said. “We scored and they didn’t. That was the difference in the game.”Pittsburgh outshot New York 16-10 in the opening period, but the Islanders held a one-goal lead.New York scored 5:46 in when Ryan Strome, on a rush down the right side, found the trailing Hickey, who wristed a shot over Fleury’s shoulder.Special teams allowed the Penguins to make up the difference. “We had to kill that 5-on-3. To get one of our own, put one in, and fire back to get another one was huge,” Crosby said. “We seemed to build a lot of momentum off of that.”(DAN SCIFO)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Dorel warns US tariffs could impact its business result in price increases

first_imgMONTREAL – Manufacturer Dorel Industries Inc. warns that proposed tariffs in the U.S. would have a significant impact on all three of its major business lines and could result in higher prices for consumers. The bicycle, furniture and baby ware maker, which manufacturers some of its goods in low-cost China, says the proposed U.S. tariffs on imports from that country is creating business uncertainties for the company and its competitors, adding that higher costs will ultimately be passed on to consumers. The Montreal-based company slipped into a loss in its second quarter even as its children’s division in the United States overcame the earlier impact of the closure of Toys “R” Us stores to post its best year-over-year quarterly growth in nine years. The company, which reports in U.S. dollars, had a net loss for the quarter ended June 30 amounting to $14.8 million, or 46 cents per share, compared to an income of $11.4 million, or 35 cents per share in the second quarter of 2017.The second-quarter results included higher tax rates than in the year-ago quarter and expenses related to restructuring and a number of other one-time items. On an adjusted basis, however, the company reported an income of 39 cents per share, beating analyst expectations of 27 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters Eikon.Revenue rose two per cent to $623.2 million as seven per cent growth in its sports segment offset a more modest decline in sales in its home and juvenile segments.Positive results in the company’s U.S. juvenile division were offset by an overall disappointing quarter, largely due to difficulty implementing a warehouse management system in Europe that caused it to miss sales and its Chilean segment in the midst of a turnaround.last_img read more

Southwestern US states close to sealing drought deal

first_imgLAS VEGAS — Water managers from seven Southwestern states that depend on the Colorado River for drinking and irrigation water are getting closer to finalizing an unprecedented drought contingency plan they may have to enact in 2020, officials said Thursday. The federal government’s top water official, Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Brenda Burman, was expected to urge action by representatives of Indian tribes and government agencies from Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming during an address at an annual conference in Las Vegas.A pact was supposed to be signed by the end of 2018, under threat that the bureau that controls the water distribution levers on the river would impose its own restrictions affecting drinking water to 40 million people and irrigation for crops in arid parts of U.S. and Mexico.Arizona and Nevada are would be the first states to feel the pinch if a shortage is declared as expected next year. Supplies to California also could be curtailed. After 19 years of drought and increasing demand, the river’s two largest federal water managers project a 52 per cent chance that the river’s biggest reservoir, Lake Mead behind Hoover Dam, will fall low enough to trigger cutbacks under agreements governing the system. The Lower Colorado River Basin states of California, Arizona and Nevada want to keep Lake Mead behind Hoover Dam above a shortage declaration trigger point by using less water than they’re legally entitled to receive. If the lake falls below that level, Arizona will face a 9 per cent reduction in water supply, Nevada a 3 per cent cut and California up to 8 per cent. Mexico’s share of river water also would be reduced.Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming want to keep the surface of Lake Powell above a target level to continue water deliveries to irrigation districts and cities and also keep hydroelectric turbines humming at Glen Canyon Dam.Lake Powell is currently at 43 per cent capacity and Lake Mead is at 38 per cent.Water officials in most of the affected states have signed off on plans in recent weeks, including the key Central Arizona Project irrigation system and the sprawling Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which serves some 19 million people.Arizona’s plan, unlike other states, still needs approval from state lawmakers. They convene in January.Ken Ritter, The Associated Presslast_img read more
