Miller: Justin Turner goes Kirk Gibson and makes everything right again

first_img Justin Turner’s 3-run walk-off homer gives Dodgers 2-0 NLCS lead “I’m not saying he’s David Ortiz, but I played with David, and you’re talking about big spots and coming up big,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “And J.T.’s that guy for us.”The Dodgers are now up 2-0 in this best-of-7 series as everyone heads to Wrigley Field, where, just a year ago, a similar NLCS unraveled remarkably fast after the Dodgers had taken the lead. This October, however, they’ve promised us things will be different, and, through two games at least, they do look like the better, more equipped and perhaps more fortunate team.Believe it, this was a game the Dodgers easily could have lost, a game they won only because their pitching was good enough to overcome everything their offense botched. But that’s what teams do en route to winning championships, right? Triumph even on days that are cluttered with so much failure? Survive and move on has worked well for so many past champs. Before Turner made everything right, the Dodgers were 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position and had left eight men on base in a game where every advancement of 90 feet was vital. They tried three pinch-hitters and none of them came through, two of them striking out. They attempted to steal against Cubs starter Jon Lester, to exploit his famous issues with holding runners on, and Yasiel Puig was thrown out anyway. Why, Kiké Hernandez even tried to walk on only three balls during a third-inning at-bat but was informed by umpires that it still takes four. So, he returned to the plate … and flied out, stranding two more runners.Yet, the Dodgers did manage to grind their way through the Cubs’ bullpen to the point where Chicago manager Joe Maddon turned Game 2 over to John Lackey.A former Angels star, Lackey today is one of the most hittable pitchers in baseball, a reliever Maddon found himself forced to go to as this game stretched toward possible extra innings.Meanwhile, Cubs closer Wade Davis went unused, Maddon preferring to wait for the save situation that would never come. But that’s a topic for Chicago to autopsy. After walking Chris Taylor with Puig already on second, Lackey served up – yeah, served up, the 92-mph fastball tailing right into Turner’s happy zone – the pitch that sealed the fate of both teams.“He just has that pulse where he can just kind of keep his calm and stay within the strike zone,” Roberts said of Turner. “(He’s) just not afraid to fail and just wants to be in that spot.”And now the Dodgers are in their preferred spot as this series advances toward even more intrigue.A column in the Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune called the Dodgers “a team that likes to engage in gamesmanship,” an interesting accusation, though one with a questionable basis.Isn’t everyone in baseball stealing signs and wearing Apple watches and decoder rings these days? Maybe gamesmanship is Puig cha-cha-cha-ing in the batter’s box or slobbering all over his bat and his hitting coach. Who knows? But then, sure enough Sunday, there was actor Rob Lowe, over the stadium public-address system, chiding noted Cubs fan Bill Murray during the “It’s Time For Dodgers Baseball” pregame announcement.More than three hours later, it was Turner delivering the parting poke, going Gibson on another vanquished October visitor to Chavez Ravine. It was time for Dodgers long ball. Whicker: Justin Turner’s homer is a thrill, but not a surprise LOS ANGELES — They call these “walk-off” wins, but Justin Turner wasn’t walking. He was soaring, not even touching the ground. He was soaring, all right, just like the baseball he launched into the night and over the center-field wall to lift the Dodgers to a 4-1 Game 2 victory over the Cubs in the National League Championship Series.Related Articles No, this one didn’t alter the direction of a World Series or even win a World Series game. But it did come on the same date on which, in 1988, Kirk Gibson hit the most famous Dodger Stadium home run ever, and if you believe in things like fate that fact is a whole lot more than just a coincidence today. For the sake of the archives, Turner also joined Gibson as the only players with postseason walk-off homers in the Dodgers’ rich and extended history. When this ball finally came down – snared expertly over a railing by a Dodgers fan in a Chase Utley jersey (only in L.A., right?) – Turner soared around the bases, beating his chest on his final approach to home plate. There, he was greeted by his delirious teammates, who engulfed Turner, the whole mass then bounding as one around their spaghetti-haired, Sasquatch-bearded star. A two-out, three-run, bottom-of-the-ninth bomb, setting off an explosion of delight and wonder in a stadium that had just hosted its latest moment of October magic.center_img Fan who caught Justin Turner’s game-winning home run has been there before Dodgers’ bullpen dazzles in Games 1 and 2 Video: Justin Turner’s 3-run walk-off home run extends the Dodgers’ NLCS lead over the Cubs Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Sunday marks one month for sports gambling in Iowa, Cy-Hawk game this weekend expected to bring business

first_imgMASON CITY — Sunday marks one month since sports gambling was legalized in the state of Iowa, and the administrator of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission says things seem to be running smoothly at the state’s casinos. Brian Ohorilko says from a compliance standpoint, the commission is very happy with how things have gone to this point.   “There have been a few bugs here and there with regard to the online apps, things that are more cosmetic, nothing operationally, and so from that standpoint we’ve been very pleased.”Ohorilko says casino operators have been pleased with the sports betting traffic they’ve seen so far in their facilities.  “As we sit here today, things have appeared to go pretty smoothly. I think the operators that have launched already are pleased with the numbers and the attendance. At least at this point, things seem to be going well.”Ohorilko says people should be patient with their local casino as sports gambling is still in the early stages of being implemented in the state.  “I still caution people that we are early on in the process, and one of the reasons why it was beneficial to launch in mid-August for those companies that were ready was to try to work out some of the bugs prior to the busiest season for sports wagering, and that’s what started last weekend with NFL season. We’ll start really getting a good handle as to what could be potential issues that come up.” Besides the start of NFL season last weekend, one of the big weekends for sports gambling in the state could come up with the Iowa-Iowa State game. Ohorilko says the casinos wanted to try to have sportsbook operations going in anticipation of some friendly wagers for this weekend’s game. ”NFL season is important, but this game this weekend, a lot of people are interested in it, and I think a lot of people just to have a legal, friendly wager on the game, I think there’s something that people are excited about. So we’ll see how the numbers go. I will say that until the market has settled, and all 18 and of the casinos that have applied for a sports wagering license are up and running, I don’t think we’ll have the true numbers, that true feeling for what it will look like, but I do think that this weekend will likely be the busiest to this point in time for the state.”Sports betting operations are open for business in 14 of the state’s 19 commercial casinos. The Diamond Jo Worth casino near Northwood opened their sportsbook operation two weeks ago, with plans to introduce their online and betting apps by the end of the year.last_img read more

‘Liberia Needs to Partner with Trustworthy Int’l Investors’

first_imgLiberia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Gessler Murray (center) introduces a delegate to President George M. Weah (right) at the SEMICA Liberia Mining and Energy Conference. -Prez Weah tells SEMICA confab participantsPresident George Weah said for Liberia to reap the benefits of its natural resources that would transform the economy by bringing prosperity to the Liberian people, “We will need to partner with trustworthy international investors.”President Weah made the remarks on Thursday, November 28, 2019, during the opening of SEMICA 2019 Liberia mining, energy, and exhibition conference held at a resort in Monrovia.“It is a well-known fact that Liberia is a resource-rich country endowed with an abundance of mineral resources, which include gold, diamonds, bauxite, iron ore, uranium, and prospective reserves of oil and gas,” President Weah told the gathering. The SEMICA Liberia 2019, is an international convention, and exhibition aimed at showcasing Liberia’s potential in mining, energy, and petroleum. The 3-day event (November 28-30) brought together government officials, including Dr. Marc-Antoine Audet, president and chief executive officer of SAMA Resources; Sylvain Some, General Director of Mines and Geology, Ministry of Mines and Quarries, Burkina Faso; local and international partners, and representatives from the diplomatic corps.“I have previously declared that Liberia is opened for business, especially for all of those that are willing to participate — on a fair, honest, and equitable basis — in the development of our resources, culminating in win-win partnerships that are respectful of the mutual interests of all parties involved,” the President said.He continued: “This conference, therefore, will give you the opportunity to have a better appreciation of our available natural resources, and enable you to see the full potential in the mining, energy, and hydrocarbon sectors. I am hopeful that the interactions afforded you in this forum, between potential investors and the relevant officials of our Government will be fruitful and productive to our mutual benefit.”The Minister of Mines and Energy, Gesler E. Murray, said the country has a rich endowment of mineral resources that need to be capitalized to create wealth, and grow a healthy macro-economy.Murray said the World Bank Liberia Country Economist issued a report in October this year, which indicated that the mining sector grew by 7% compared to the non-mining sectors, such as agriculture and manufacturing, which declined by 3.4%.“This signifies that the mining sector has the potential to be an engine of growth; a key strategy of our government to use the sector revenue to stimulate growth in agriculture, manufacturing hospitality, tourism, and fishery,” Mr. Murray said.He said since the sitting of the Weah-led Administration in January of 2018, the Ministry of Mines and Energy along with other stakeholder institutions has exerted efforts to reopen derelict iron ore mines, as well as bring into operations new ones.Mr. Murray said falling prices of iron ore in the last several years in the global commodities market were invariably linked to accelerated developments of iron ore projects. He said the forecast by some analysts that global iron ore production will grow 0.9% annually until 2028, offers a glimmer of hope for the Liberian iron ore industry.“This is also promising news for the Euronimba and other mining projects in nearby Guinea that are seeking to transship and export mining produces using Liberian rail and port facilities. To this effect, the governments of Guinea and Liberia signed an implementation agreement in October this year for the shared-use of resources and infrastructure between the countries,” said Murray.Mr. Murray said Liberia is now shifting the paradigm by diversifying more into gold, diamonds and non-traditional minerals, such as coltan, lithium, graphite, bauxite, barite, phosphate, and base metals. He said Liberia is looking forward to more exploration companies taking up grounds to assess the potentials of these minerals.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
