Expanding the Dell Portfolio of Ubuntu Laptops and Workstations

first_imgLast month, PCWorld told Linux enthusiasts to rejoice because “super-thin ‘Project Sputnik’ XPS 13 laptops from Dell with Ubuntu and Intel Skylake chips should be just around the corner.”Well, that corner was turned today. The 5th generation of the XPS 13 developer edition is now available in the U.S. We are starting out with three i7 configurations – including a much-asked-for 16GB version – and plan to add an i5 option. And while the date for global availability of the XPS 13 is still to be announced, worldwide Precision 5510, 3510, 7510 and 7710 mobile workstations now all come in Ubuntu flavors. This means our complete Precision mobile workstation portfolio is now available globally with Linux pre-loaded. To get to the Ubuntu option, click on the “Customize & Buy” button on the system you wish to purchase, then select Ubuntu Linux in the operating system section.Project Sputnik leader Barton George noted how this came about in his personal post about the latest developments:“Thanks to your support the XPS 13 developer edition has gone from one, to multiple configs. On the higher end, in response to the continued interest in a larger system, OS architect Jared Dominguez spent a bunch of late nights putting together instructions on how to get Ubuntu running on the Precision M3800. From here interest kept mounting and a year later the Ubuntu-based M3800 became an official product.”George also discussed how when Dell first kicked off Project Sputnik, the idea was that it would be a DevOps platform. A key piece of this platform would be a “cloud launcher” that would allow developers to create apps within “micro clouds” and then deploy them to a public or private cloud.“Unfortunately this turned out to be a lot more difficult than we had hoped. As luck would have it however, a couple of years later, Docker came along and allowed us to do what we hope the cloud launcher would,” said George. “Docker containers allow applications created locally to be pushed, as is, to the cloud. And because Docker containers run on Linux, developers don’t have to run them within a virtualized environment like they would on other platforms.”George’s blog also notes that there were several minor fixes that were not available in time for launch but have been made available as over the air updates so make sure to run all Ubuntu updates. These fixes pertain to both the XPS 13 and Precisions, so hop over there to read more.last_img read more

Dell EMC DSSD D5: Enterprise Analytics- Let the Transformation Begin

first_imgNew today: Dell EMC DSSD D5/PowerEdge R730 servers delivers record-breaking performance on benchmark for tick data analytics and delivers third major software release.Organizations today face many challenges and conflicting priorities including data growth and data variety, supporting an increasing number of users and devices, navigating a fiercely competitive landscape and continuously shrinking budgets. Pressure continues to mount for organizations to use data strategically to improve decision-making and deliver next-generation business services. Enterprise analytics at scale are increasingly becoming a linchpin for organizations to survive and flourish in a data-driven, real-time digital world. So what’s holding back organizations from benefiting from analytics at scale?Until DSSD, customers needing low latency and massive I/O for analytics at scale have been forced to use server attached flash, large DRAM configurations and complicated non-standard CPU designs. This resulted in inefficient and redundant use of compute and flash, non-scalable architecture, network related bottlenecks and operational overhead. All of this significantly impacts customers’ ability to support real-time data ingestion and an increasing number of concurrent workloads and users.Let’s review key validations of DSSD’s performance for analytics at scale:Securities Technology Analysis Center (STAC) M3 benchmark testing for tick data analytics. Today, we are announcing that STAC has tested and validated the performance of DSSD D5/PowerEdge R730 servers with the STAC M3 benchmark suite leveraging kdb+ database from Kx Systems, provider of time-series analytics for streaming, real-time and historical data and the leading database for financial services organizations. The combination delivered record-breaking performance in 84% of queries in the M3 testing suite designed to test scalability with respect to dataset size and number of concurrent users. DSSD and PowerEdge R730 combination was also faster in 94% of queries in the baseline M3 suite than a system using a larger distributed architecture with a parallel file system. The Dell EMC architecture used only 33% of the storage bandwidth and 50% of the storage capacity. STAC M3 testing demonstrates that DSSD D5 can accelerate trading analytics applications used by leading financial services organizations, along with tick data applications used in other industries, to utilize more data and provide faster results than any product previously tested.Pete Lankford, Director of STAC“Trading firms in the STAC Benchmark Council designed the STAC-M3 suite to represent a range of performance challenges that are common in financial time-series analysis,” said Peter Lankford, Director of STAC. “As data volumes grow and as the query demands from quants, machines, and regulators increase, it is more important than ever for tick database solutions to perform well at scale. Dell EMC DSSD D5 and PowerEdge R730 servers with Kx Systems’s kdb+ have established performance records while testing at the largest STAC-M3 data scale so far.”Mark Sykes, Chief Operating Officer, Kx Systems:“DSSD D5 provides a great avenue to improve the performance of existing applications built on kdb+,” said Sykes. “Our financial services customers are always on the lookout for new architectures that combine low operational latencies and high data rates. At the same time, our customers need to store a massive amount of persistent data without compromising on performance metrics. With DSSD D5 our sophisticated customers can see an immediate benefit.”ESG Validated Performance for Oracle. ESG labs demonstrated that DSSD D5 performed complex Oracle queries 6X faster and minimized the need to create materialized views, enabling real time analytics on live data.Principled Technologies Validated Performance for SAS Analytics. Principled Technologies demonstrated that Dell EMC DSSD D5 and PowerEdge servers delivered extreme low latency access to data and superior bandwidth to enable consolidation of multiple SAS marts on a single platform, run more analytics and enable more users. Are we done yet?Today, in addition, we are announcing our third major software release. A few key highlights of the release, which will enhance D5’s robustness and security, include improvements around high availability, management and upgrade support, and security/access (ACLs/LDAP).With continued product development and innovation, combined with multiple third party validations of industry leading performance across diverse high performance use cases, Dell EMC is paving the way for future innovations and continuing to drive DSSD’s unique capabilities in enterprise workloads.Want to learn more? Dell Honored as WBENC Top Corporation for Women Business Enterprises

first_imgEver see a company with a long list of well-known brands that are their customers? These lists are meant to prove that they are a worthwhile company to do business with. When I see those lists now, I wonder what brand was their first customer. Who was willing to take a chance on them when their customer list was not as impressive? I’m proud to say I work for Dell, a company that is willing to be that first customer. In concert with the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), we’re proud to to be on the 17th annual list of America’s Top Corporations for Women’s Business Enterprises. This is the only national award honoring corporations for world-class supplier diversity programs that reduce barriers and drive growth for women-owned businesses. This is Dell’s eighth consecutive year to be included.Last July, a group of 11th grade girls visited Dell on a field trip. There was a spark in their eyes and excitement as they tried out new products and learned about engineering. It was a prime example that females, from a young age, having extreme potential and passion.Dell’s support for women extends beyond opening our doors for 11th grade female trips. We support women in business and engage women around the world through a variety of programs, including our Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network and through our supplier diversity program that ensures we have and support women-owned businesses in our supply chain.Dell continues to support women owned enterprises (WBE) through internal and external diversity programs that empower, educate, and connect women, and collaboration with organizations that support WBEs. In 2014 Dell established a Global Ambassador program to expand its worldwide support and connections for diverse owned businesses. To date, the Ambassador program has nine ambassadors representing China, India, Central and South America, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and South Africa. For me personally, it’s important to work for a company that puts its money where its mouth is especially when it comes to women entrepreneurs. I have seen first-hand that one of the best ways for a women-owned business to thrive is by having a company like Dell who is willing to be their customer before they have a long list of well-known customers. In June 2009, Dell was added to the Billion Dollar Roundtable, a top-level forum for advancing the practice of supplier diversity, and have qualified for membership every year since. This honor recognizes our commitment of more than $1 billion in annual supply-chain spending with minority-, woman-owned and small suppliers. In the 2016 fiscal year, we spent more than $3 billion dollars with diverse suppliers across production and indirect procurement.Dell believes in the power of diverse businesses to fuel innovation, drive economic growth, and create new jobs. We’re powering the WBEs of the world and are proud to be honored as a WBENC Top Corporation for Women Business Enterprises. To commemorate this, Dell will be honored in front of an audience of more than 1,500 business leaders at the WBENC Summit & Salute to Women’s Business Enterprises taking place March 21-23, 2017 in New Orleans.last_img read more

Central African Republic marks 2 years since peace deal

first_imgSaturday marks two years since Central African Republic’s government signed a peace deal with rebel groups in an attempt to end years of fighting, but the country faces growing violence that threatens to null the agreement. President Faustin-Archange Touadera urges parties to stay faithful to the deal, and he assures civilians that the army is doing what it can to reclaim rebel-held areas. The renewed violence occurred after the constitutional court rejected former president Francois Bozize’s candidacy for December’s election. A coalition of the six strongest militias backing Bozize seeks to overturn the results.last_img
