HOTT FM Donates Modern Latrine to Kpallah Community

first_imgThe management of HOTT FM 107.9 radio station has over the years tried to identify with its fans across Liberia. On several occasions, the station has single-handily donated food, school supplies, hygienic supplies and other necessities to the needy.Lately, HOTT FM’s CEO Bernard Benson (a.k.a. DJ Blue) and staff have again over the week helped those in need by listening to their cry. “We have played a major role in making sure we sanitize people about the dangers of Ebola. And we were also responsible for the ‘Ebola is real’ song that made the whole world realize that Ebola is real,” stated DJ Blue.Members of the Kpallah community, Brewerville, outside of Monrovia, appealed to HOTT FM ’s management that a toilet was urgently needed.In response to the request, HOTT FM dedicated a modern four-stall latrine.“We see it necessary to help, especially when a person is in need,” Blue said. “The dedication also shows what a community that is together can achieve collectively. As a small Liberian business, this gesture signifies our strength and also the passion we have for communities.”DJ Blue called the gesture “amazing”, not because the project cost the station $7,500.00 USD, but because “this is the first time in history that a small business (radio station) owned by young Liberians has embarked on a sustainable project with such magnitude”, he added.“HOTT FM has reached out to numerous orphanages and communities, and we have legal documents to prove all. Long before the Ebola outbreak, we identified with WestPoint by feeding them and giving them packages of goodies for a whole day,” DJ Blue added.Meanwhile, the Kpallah community was engaged when DJ Blue was fortunate to meet its community leader Alahaji Seator. He says he was astonished at the fact that community dwellers didn’t have a proper place to ease themselves.“Grandmothers, mothers, children, women and the whole community are using the bushes to ease themselves,” DJ Blue recalls.  “And being a well meaning citizen with heart and love for his/her community, especially with the position to help, such a thing can’t be ignored.”HOTT FM is also known for throwing big bashes, concerts and entertaining events. According to DJ Blue, HOTT FM held a series of events to raise money for the latrine project.“The project cost $7,500.00. No one heeded their call, so we decided to take the bull by the horns. We are proud to say this modern latrine was one hundred percent funded by HOTT FM 107.9. I hope other institutions will imitate what HOTT FM is doing and has done,” DJ Blue urged.For the meantime, the community leader Alahaji Seator extolled HOTT FM for dedicating the modern latrine to his community and its people.“People who carry on initiatives in communities are normally politicians. But to see a private business institution erecting a modern latrine in my community brings me joy. Groves set for rematch with Anderson

South Africa’s shoe-shine king

A former South African Airways employee, he is a serial entrepreneur who started up several small businesses that were unsuccessful. In his life, Mgayiya has sold produce – he sold eggs to the Parliament canteen – as well as worked with livestock; he has also had a public mobile phone business and dabbled in stock market investment.Ultimately, those efforts proved fruitless. “I was considered a loser by my peers and family because I resigned from SAA and the money I invested was gone. That created a lot of pressure for me to look for a job. But I did not want to do that because it is not who I am at all,” Mgayiya says.In 2002, inspired by an article about a local shoe shiner, he invested in the man’s business. He used his connections to negotiate a deal to operate at Cape Town International Airport. The company, initially named Airport Shoe Shine, started off slow but steady. Mgayiya sold most of his valuables to invest in his first luxury shiner’s chair and the company’s single employee.“We worked 18 hours a day, six days a week,” he remembers, with the hard work paying off in a substantial profit in the first two months, money he invested back into the company. With two more chairs and more shiners, the business soared.The company’s biggest break was when it received authorisation to open at OR Tambo International, South Africa’s largest airport, where the shiners became a popular feature for travelling businesspeople.Mgayiya partnered with Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), which operates the airports in the country, in his inevitable, unconventional way.“I had read about Acsa looking to encourage businesses within the airport and one day saw the chief executive walking around the Cape Town terminal. I walked up and told her how well she was doing; how I could see how she had turned the business around because I was at the airport every day. And she was so impressed that she asked me why I had not expanded to Johannesburg.”The rest is history.In 2008, the business expanded to OR Tambo and Durban’s King Shake airports and soon after into five other airports around South Africa. However, the stress of running eight detached locations on a limited budget led Mgayiya to close some and focus on the major airports in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.“We learnt our lesson. We expanded too quickly to inappropriate places, which almost killed our business. We had to kill those operations fast before they killed us,” Mgayiya says.But as these three continue to gain more customers, Lere’s Shoe Shine is now eyeing expansion again. The business’s customers – be they tourists arriving in South Africa for the first time or seasoned business travellers – always enjoy having someone to talk to. “They enjoy the experience of interacting with (the shoe shiner), (so all my) employees have extrovert personalities“They’re someone to connect with, talk to, when you’re far from home in a hard, cold place like an airport, it’s nice to find a quiet, relaxed space for a chance to stop and relax for a moment and maybe engage meaningfully with someone that you might not have met in any other situation. That’s what this business is really about, everything else will follow if you engage with the client.”Today, Mgayiya has 45 employees and he estimates his company shines the shoes of between 120 000 and 130 000 customers a year.His advice to budding entrepreneurs is to be prepared to commit themselves completely to their business, even if it means facing greater risks. “If you are not invested in that business, it changes the chances of success.”He firmly believes that good businesses are made from good ideas, from your head and heart. “It is the driving force which is generated from the love and passion for those ideas that makes it successful – it is not just the money,” Mgayiya says.“No matter how poor you are, no matter where you come from in life. it is your brain that makes you successful and your heart that drives you.”Source: AFKInsiderlast_img read more

Incubating Women Entrepreneurs

first_imgRelated Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… audrey watters A story last week in the San Jose Mercury News highlights, as the title suggests, “the dearth of women in tech.” The article begins with a description of InDinero founder and Y Combinator alum Jessica Mah: “I just wasn’t sure if Jessica Mah was for real,” writes Scott Duke Harris, admitting that he probably wouldn’t have had this impression if Jessica were Jesse. He admits it’s a sort of “gender profiling” – the expectation that girls can’t (or are less apt, perhaps) to found tech companies. The article points to the small number of women who’ve participated in Y Combinator’s program over the years – only 14 out of 450 have been women. “It’s tempting to think the Y in Y Combinator has something to do with the Y chromosome,” writes Harris. Debates about a chromosomal aptitude for math and logic aside, there are undoubtedly many cultural pressures and expectations that seem to steer girls and women away from pursuing technology careers. The Case for an XX CombinatorAnd the obstacles that stand in the way of women entrepreneurs, particularly those that don’t seem to fit into the Y Combinator model, prompted Tereza Nemessanyi to ask, first in comments on Fred Wilson‘s blog then in a longer post on her own, as to whether there was a need for an XX Combinator.“To start,” she writes, “Y Combinator is seeking founders who code. And in today’s tech innovation model, the founders have to. Problem is, very, very few women in the U.S. can code.” Furthermore, “Y Combinator participants are for the most part very young — in their early 20’s. This is not when women would be most inclined. Women who start businesses like to know what they’re doing, and be trained and experienced in it. That takes up our 20’s. We have kids in our 30’s. Our entrepreneurial sweet spot is around age 40.” Prestigious incubator programs like Y Combinator also demand participants relocate, something that isn’t always possible for founders (men or women) with families. While Y Combinator and other programs have been enormously successful in supporting innovative tech startups, it’s not a model that “works” for everyone.Women 2.0 Labs Recognizing the importance of incubator and accelerator programs that support women entrepreneurs, Women 2.0 Labs is a pre-incubator for men and women. The mission of Women 2.0 “is to increase the number of female founders of technology startups, by enabling entrepreneurs with a network, resources and knowledge to take your startup from an idea to launch.”Women 2.0 Labs is a five-week program – “five engineers, five more engineers, five designers, five business mavens, five teams, five weeks, five days a week, five product releases, five minimal viable products released.” The teams are formed organically at the start of the program, and by its end are hopefully in the position to apply to an incubator program or be ready to launch. The program takes place in the evenings and on weekends, so that participants can keep their “day jobs.” Visiting advisors have included Steve Blank, Eric Ries, Dave McClure, Ann Muira-Koo, Mari Baker, and Theresia Gouw-Ranzetta.A key benefit from the program is the establishment of “founder history” created in the teams as they work together intensely over the course of the program. Women 2.0 Labs also provides participants a first taste of truly creating something from an idea to a basic prototype. As Labs participant Rebecca Woodcock says of her involvement, “The idea has been formulating for a while, but my lack of technical expertise has stifled me from pursuing product development.” The Labs program has helped her form a team to bring her idea to fruition. Women 2.0 CEO Shaherose Charania says she sees the program as a “way to jump into the deep end of being a founder while still wearing a lifejacket (keeping your job). By the end of the program I expect individuals and teams to be able to rip off the life jacket and keep swimming into the deep end (quitting their job to work on the startup they started in the program).”While Women 2.0 Labs does provide great mentorship and skill-building opportunities for women entrepreneurs, it doesn’t address all of the issues raised by Tereza Nemessanyi. It requires relocation to the Bay Area, for example. But the questions raised by her call for an XX Combinator, alongside the work of Women 2.0, Astia and other programs, point to some of the efforts to help support more women entrepreneurs. As a recent Kauffman Foundation study found, providing support and mentorship is one of the keys to increasing the number of women entrepreneurs. Five soldiers trapped under snow in Kashmir

Three soldiers went missing from a forward post in the Kanzalwan sub-sector of Gurez in Bandipora,” a Srinagar-based Army spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, told The Hindu.An Army official said an 11-member patrol team of 36 Rashtriya Rifles was on an inter-post movement around 8.30 p.m. on Monday when three jawans slipped into a ravine. The posts are close to the Line of Control in the Bakhtor area, more than 200 km from here, of Gurez.“A specialist team from the High Altitude Warfare School reached the site and started rescue operations, which are still on,” the official said.Two soldiers of a patrol team of an officer and 10 troopers of 20 Dogra fell into a ravine at Naugam around 5 p.m. on Monday. The specialist team was unable to reach the site on Tuesday because of heavy snowfall, officials said. Preliminary reports suggest heavy snowfall, which started on Monday, caused these accidents. Over four feet of snow has accumulated in these areas. Ghulam Qadir Khan, an Army porter from Kilshey village of Tulail, fell to death during snowfall. The body has been recovered.Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, Sajjad Hussain on Tuesday asked people in the Gurez and Tulail areas not to venture out in avalanche-prone areas till the weather improved.Snow in the plainsThe plains of Kashmir Valley also witnessed the season’s first snow spell in the past 24 hours, badly affecting road connectivity. The national highways connecting Srinagar to Jammu, Leh and Poonch, besides the Mughal-Sinthan Top, Jammu-Doda and Arnas-Mahore highways are closed.“Men with machinery are busy clearing snow for vehicular movement,” said Colonel Awadhesh Singh, Director, Works, Project Beacon, Border Roads Organisation.
