Rare Air: LeBron on cusp of passing Jordan’s scoring mark

Among current players, James Harden is second to James with 257 games, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.James typically avoids talking about his accomplishments, saying that’s what he’ll do once he retires. But the double-digit scoring streak, which dates to Jan. 5, 2007, and an eight-point game against Milwaukee in his fifth season, has turned him somewhat reflective.“I’ve stayed available, obviously,” James said following a 41-point, 10-rebound, 8-assist performance in a win over the Hornets. “I haven’t played every game but for the most part I’ve played over 70 percent of my games throughout that journey. … It’s just another feat for me to be appreciative and humbled by what I’ve been able to do. And just knowing where I come from, I look at it and say, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m in this position,’ knowing where I come from.”As a child being raised by a single mom, James found father figures in the coaches who helped him refine his game. There were others in Akron, Ohio, who protected the basketball prodigy and made sure he didn’t stray from a path toward greatness. Then there was Jordan, whose blend of passion, skill and artistry made an indelible impression on a young James.ADVERTISEMENT “I think I fell in love with the game because of Mike, just because of what he was able to accomplish,” James said last year after breaking Jordan’s playoff scoring record. “When you’re watching Michael Jordan, it’s almost like a god. So I didn’t think I could be Mike.”And yet James has surpassed expectations and more than lived up to the “Chosen One” label, a tag he got in high school and had tattooed across his shoulders before turning pro.One of the few coaches who worked with Jordan and James, Cavaliers assistant Larry Drew was asked to compare the two hardwood heroes.“Oh man, that’s a tough one,” said Drew, filling in while Cleveland coach while Tyronn Lue is on medical leave. “Certainly Michael was as good of a finesse player as there was. You just never seen anything like LeBron with his size, his speed, his power. He’s something different. But the one thing that both guys do have in common, they’re really driven to win and to be the best.”Watching James catch and overtake Jordan has been thrilling to his teammates, who are continually awed by a player who shows little signs of wear. James told The Associated Press earlier this week that he would vote for himself as MVP this season, and there’s not a player on Cleveland’s roster who would oppose his case.James has excelled during perhaps the most challenging season of his career as the Cavs have been ravaged by injuries and overhauled with three major trades at the deadline.J.R. Smith is savoring the chance to witness greatness.“It’s pretty dope,” the forward said. “It seems like every game it’s something. When you’re up there with Mike, it’s a different level. You can actually sit there and tell your grandkids hopefully one day that you were part of that. … It’s kind of overwhelming at times.”Jordan, the Hornets’ majority owner, didn’t attend Wednesday’s game, which ended with the hoop-savvy Charlotte crowd standing to salute and serenade James with chants of “M-V-P!”It was a moment to set aside loyalty and honor a once-in-a-generation player. Rescue West Point and Other Monrovia Beaches

first_imgIs there an emergency   fund anywhere in the government of Liberia? Should there be one, we know of nothing more urgent than reinstating the Beach and Waterways Project of the Liberia Maritime Authority (LMA).Why the urgency?  Christmas is here.  What treat shall we give the tens of thousands of our   children living in West   Point, Clara Town, Point Four, Popo Beach, New Kru Town and South Beach?  Is it going to be lots of good food, new clothing and footwear, toys and other goodies? Or is it going to be, by woeful contrast, renewed defecation and the indiscriminate throwing of trash on these beaches, inviting swarms of flies, rats and roaches to make the children sick?If nothing is done, and done immediately, the flies, rats and roaches will poison our   children’s Christmas and their general wellbeing for the foreseeable future.    Instead of giving them a good time, they will get sick with cholera, diarrhea and malaria, brought on by these deadly disease carriers. It was on behalf of these tens of thousands of children in these beach communities that we heard yesterday on our back page, the cry of West Point Commissioner Miatta Flowers.  She told our Senior Reporter, Omari Jackson, that she was worried that if the LMA Beach and Waterways Project were not restored, the children and general populations of these areas would suffer the deadly consequences. All of us and our government should remember that the people we are talking about are among the most vulnerable in the society.  They are poor and deprived, since the vast majority of their parents are either self-employed petty traders or not employed at all.  When the Man whose birthday we celebrate tomorrow uttered these words, “The kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these,” Christ was talking precisely about the children of South Beach, West Point, Clara Town, Point Four, Popo Beach, New Kru Town and all the nation’s slum and other impoverished  communities. So in all our last minute shopping and other preparations for this most important holiday, Christmas, let us remember these children and do whatever we can to rescue them from this totally unnecessary but deadly malaise. What can we do?  What can anyone do? Pick up our cell phones and call someone who cares or should care and who is able to do something about the problem.  Pick up ourselves and go find someone who can make the difference.  Finance Minister Amara Konneh has left the country.  So the next best person to call, visit or engage is the President herself, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.  Persuade her to get her lieutenants to find the money from somewhere to restore the LMA’s Beach and Waterways Project. If we do nothing else for these children, let us do this one.  It is not just about giving them a good Christmas; it is about saving lives by saving our environment.Let us remember, too, that in most of our neighboring countries, Sierra Leone, La Cote d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Senegal, the people are using their beaches to bring in thousands of tourists throughout the year to spend their money and provide jobs for the local populations.Let us begin this Christmas by injecting some pride in ourselves by making our beaches a playground for our children and our people in general.  This commitment to protect and make good uses of our beaches will pave the way for the development of the tourist industry in Liberia. There have been talks of the creation of a National Tourism Authority, an autonomous body that will organize tourism in Liberia.  This is necessary since the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICAT) has failed to do anything about tourism—or culture or even information itself.Let us in Liberia finally realize that tourism is a money maker and a job creator.  Let the development of our tourist industry be a New Year resolution that will be taken seriously and forcefully implemented.  Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Pogba says he is ‘judged differently’ in snipe at critics

first_img0Shares0000Paul Pogba has endured his fair share of criticism this season but excelled in last weekend’s victory over Man CityLONDON, United Kingdom, Apr 27 – Paul Pogba says he is “judged differently” from other Premier League midfielders after a frustrating season that has seen him dropped by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on several occasions. The Frenchman was widely criticised for a lacklustre display in this month’s 1-0 home loss to West Bromwich Albion that handed the title to Manchester City — the latest in a long line of disappointing efforts from the former Juventus star since his move to United two years ago. There was even talk that Mourinho had told United to put Pogba up for sale, just days after City manager Pep Guardiola said he had been offered the chance to sign the midfielder by his agent in January. But the 25-year-old has produced some improved displays in recent weeks, including a man-of-the-match performance in the comeback win at Manchester City and is looking for more of the same when Arsenal visit on Sunday.“It’s quite funny because we don’t judge me on the midfield part,” Pogba, who joined the club for a then world record fee of £89 million ($123 million), told Sky Sports.“We judge me on assists and goals and that’s the truth. I can make an outstanding game, but if I don’t score or make an assist they will say, ‘that is normal’, or whatever.“But if someone else does it, it is different. They will maybe be man of the match. I think I’m judged differently, but it’s good.”The France international, who has scored five goals and made 10 assists in the Premier League this season, said he saw the criticism as a challenge and it helped him improve.“I don’t take it in a bad way,” he said. “I’ll try to score and make assists and that’s it. I still want to do my job in midfield.“If I can help the team in attack and defence and make a difference I will do it. If I can score and assist it is even better.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Latest: Chelsea 2 Liverpool 1

first_imgChelsea remain ahead but Samuel Eto’o squandered a great opportunity to extend their lead as both teams kept up a high tempo early in the second half.Eto’o looked a favourite to score when he was sent clear by Eden Hazard but Reds keeper Simon Mignolet produced a fine save with his arm.Liverpool have posed a greater threat since half-time, as Mamadou Sakho headed against the woodwork and Luis Suarez fired straight at Petr Cech.Earlier, Hazard and Eto’o had grabbed the goals as Chelsea responded brilliantly to going behind early on.Liverpool took the lead in the third minute as a Phillipe Coutinho free-kick aimed in at Luis Suarez bounced off Branislav Ivanovic’s arm and into the path of Martin Skrtel to turn home.Chelsea went on to dominate the rest of the first half, with Hazard and Frank Lampard forcing Mignolet into saves. They were deservedly level when Hazard curled a composed finish into the top corner after being set up by Oscar and then went in front thanks to Eto’o’s poached finish which squirmed through Mignolet’s grasp.Between the two goals, Cahill produced an outstanding challenge as Joe Allen prepared to pull the trigger.Chelsea have substituted both Branislav Ivanovic, who picked up a knock during the first half, and Frank Lampard, replaced by John Obi Mikel at half-time.Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic (Cole 30), Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta; Luiz, Lampard (Mikel 46); Willian, Oscar, Hazard; Eto’o.Subs: Schwarzer, Essien, Mikel, Schurrle, Mata, Torres.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

InstantLoop Leverages Twilio API For Quick Phone Feedback

first_imgLast week we told you about “lean startups” and how one of their strengths is rapidly collecting customer feedback and implementing changes to their product. With online tools like Get Satisfaction, gathering the opinons of your users is easy, and now with InstantLoop you can even hear what they have to say with automated phone surveys.InstantLoop is the recent winner of the Twilio Startup Weekend Challenge, a contest for companies utilizing Twilio’s API for sending and receiving phone calls. Users enter questions and possible answers, pick the phone numbers to call and then sit back and watch the results come in. The service is subscription-free; instead, users pay as they go at a rate of $.10 per customer feedback with the first 20 at no charge.New users can sign in with one of six forms of identification: Google, OpenID, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo and AOL. From there, users create a poll by giving the poll a name, entering in as many questions as needed, providing up to eight possible answers per question, and picking an introduction and closing message. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… I tested the service on myself, and within seconds of hitting send I was listening to a computerized female voice asking me the questions I had entered just a minute before. A few moments later, InstantLoop had graphed my responses on a pie chart, and had created a list of questions and corresponding answers and phone numbers.Certainly a small business can take advantage of InstantLoop, but until the ability to record personalized messages is activated, customers may be turned off by the computer-voiced calls. It would seem that since the product is still in beta that some key features have yet to be activated, such as contact management and overall interface experience. Once these features are available, InstantLoop could be a popular way to hear back from your startup’s user base. Additionally, it will be interesting to see if InstantLoop can gain traction as a startup whose entire business relies on a third-party API. We recently told you about Totlol, a startup built on top of YouTube’s API that was damaged by a sudden change to API’s terms of service. However, a similar problem is not as likely since InstantLoop won Twilio’s own competition for using the API.UPDATE: InstantLoop has responded to our inquiry, stating that the recording feature was pulled from the beta release, but should be coming soon. chris cameron Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostingcenter_img Related Posts InstantLoop claims that users can record the questions and messages themselves, but I saw no option to do so when trying it out myself. Attempts to contact InstantLoop on this issue received no response, so perhaps this feature is still being developed. After creating the questions and answers, users can either save the survey or enter in phone numbers and send it out for polling. InstantLoop also provides the ability to mask their phone number with a caller ID of your choosing, which may encourage users to pick up since the number may be familiar to them. Return to Sender – HVAC Return Pathway Options

first_imgRELATED ARTICLESReturn-Air ProblemsThis New Door Design Solves an Old ProblemPerfect Balance Makes the CutNew Green Building Products — March 2011An Easy Retrofit for Return AirAll About Furnaces and Duct Systems If a forced-air HVAC system is pushing more air into a space or room than return pathways can match, some spaces in the home become pressurized and others depressurized. This imbalance can cause problems: thermal comfort, moisture, and even combustion safety.Types of HVAC returnsIn an ideal world, every supply would have a companion return duct. This approach is called a dedicated return for each supply. But most older and even many new homes have one or maybe two central returns located in common spaces because it is less expensive and difficult to locate and run just a supply to each space. With central returns, here are the ways to provide return pathways: door undercuts, jump ducts, transfer grilles, and the deKeiffer bypass.Door undercutsThis is certainly the easiest and cheapest way to attempt a return pathway but it is rarely sufficient. For most situations, door undercuts need to be greater than 1.5 inches to be sufficient and that amount of undercut is very often not acceptable for aesthetic or privacy reasons. Jump ductsA jump duct is a large insulated flex duct that connects two ceiling grilles, one just inside the door to the supplied room and the other just on the other side of the door in the hallway ceiling. The sharp bend and variegated surface of the interior lining of the jump duct reduces sound transfer without compromising air movement. Since this approach penetrates the ceiling plane, the jump duct must be carefully air sealed if it breaks into an unconditioned space like the attic.Transfer grillesThere are two types of transfer grilles, above-door and high-low offset. The above-door transfer grille simply has two grilles located above the door between the room and common space, one on each wall, with offset baffles to limit sound transmission. The high-low offset is located in an interior wall framing cavity adjacent to the door between the room and common space. One grille is located high on the wall on one side (usually the common space), the other low on the wall (in the room). The offset reduces sound transmission. Note that this interior framing cavity must be clean and without wiring penetrations (or seal these penetrations as you would if it were an exterior wall framing cavity). The de Keiffer bypassAn HVAC engineer from Boulder, CO, Rob deKeiffer of the Boulder Design Alliance, came up with an elegant return pathway: the deKeiffer Bypass. The door trim is spaced off of the wall on both sides enough to create around 23 square inches of free air space connecting the room and the common space. The framing cavity space above the door is sleeved with sheet metal to create a dedicated pathway connecting the two sides of the spaced-out door trim.Armand Magnelli’s (Livable Housing, Inc.) perspectiveAnother approach is to install a product that combines a metal sleeve with an interior baffle and grilles on both sides of the wall, such as the Tamarak Return Air Pathway (RAP). Or one of Halton’s transfer grilles (these more commercial in nature). These products purportedly provide better noise reduction with good air flow and are relatively easy to install. The fit between standard stud spacing in interior partition walls. For an independent analysis of several approaches see the following review by the Building America Program. An advantage of using the products from Tamarak is that they are sized for CFM capacity, an important variable in balancing the airflow between rooms. The issue with the products from Tamarak and Halton is that while they provide an attractive and effective packaged solution it may be difficult to convince local HVAC distributors to stock their lines of products forcing contractors to order them online. Some of the other solutions are fabricated from stock components available at most HVAC distributors. The use of any of these solutions may also improve performance of whole house ventilation systems by enabling better circulation of fresh air from bedrooms at night, a crucial time to deliver fresh air to occupants.Your perspectiveBe great to learn what method you use and why? Your Client’s Value Lens

first_imgYour dream client views the world through their own lens. They see the world through the framework of their industry, their business model, their own business, their challenges, their opportunities, and their experiences. The individual stakeholders within their company each have their own experiences and biases, too.The biases create a lens through which your client (and the stakeholders who make up your client) view the world. That lens shapes how they perceive value. Call it their value lens. When the value that you create is aligned with your prospective client’s value lens, it’s easy to sell. They perceive the value in what you sell, and it aligns with and supports their worldview. But the trouble begin when your prospective client’s lens deletes or distorts the value that you create.Distortions and DeletionsLet’s use price as an example. You might be able to produce far greater results than your low price competitors. You might even be able to prove a compelling ROI that any CFO would be proud to sign off on. But some of your prospective clients (some stakeholders) will have a value lens that deletes the value you create. Their lens only lets in “lowest price.” If they don’t see lowest price, their lens deletes the value you create; it’s not enough for you to win their business. But the deletion and distortion of value occur in other areas.Your dream client might have a stakeholder who perceives value through a political lens. If your solution doesn’t allow them to bury some internal opponent, they perceive other solutions as more valuable. If it doesn’t help them make the political case that they should be promoted, they can’t perceive the value.Match the Value or Change the WorldviewThere aren’t any easy answers for dealing with problems of value deletion and distortion. You can sometimes align the value you create with your client’s value lens. Other times you have to work on changing your dream client’s value lens altogether. Neither is easy, and swapping out the lens takes a lot of time. But the sooner you start working on understanding what your dream client sees through their value lens, the sooner you can match it or start helping to change it.QuestionsWhat does your client perceive through their value lens? What do you do when you have a mismatch between the value you create and your prospective client’s value lens? How do prospective clients delete the value you create by viewing it through their lens? How do they distort the value you create because of their lens? How do you match or change their lens?last_img read more
