NGT to take up stubble burning case on October 30

first_imgThe National Green Tribunal on Tuesday said it would consider later this month the steps taken by the Centre and Punjab and Haryana governments to check burning of crop residue by farmers to curb air pollution. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar deferred the matter for hearing on October 30 after lawyers appearing for both the parties sought adjournment of the case. The green panel had earlier said “we expect no individual, body, department, panchayat, associations to directly or indirectly recommend or promote burning of crop residues in Punjab, UP and Haryana.” On the last date of hearing, the green panel had said the “serious” issue of stubble burning by farmers was still going on and had sought the response of the Centre as well as the Punjab and Haryana governments on the issue. It had earlier asked for names and details of all power houses and biomass-based energy plants that can use crop residue for power generation and had directed Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab governments to provide a detailed strategy of how happy seeders (machines to sow wheat without burning of paddy crop residue) or balers can be given to farmers. The tribunal had also sought a reply from the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) as to why it cannot take the stubble from the farmers under its corporate social responsibility programme for the “general cause of environment”.The NGT had on October 11 directed Punjab to produce the farmers after the State said it had provided assistance to some of them to encourage them not to burn crop residue. The tribunal had taken exception to the fact that even after more than two years, nothing substantial has been done with regard to stubble burning. The Punjab government had earlier said it had taken Kalar Majri village in Nabha Tehsil of Patiala district as a model project for implementing the directions of the NGT and to sensitise the farmers. Earlier, the NGT had also asked Punjab to look into the problems faced by the farmers and directed its counsel to seek instructions on whether compensation could be provided to them for disposing their agricultural residue while giving them liberty to engage any agency of their choice. It had warned the governments of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan that it would stop the payment of salaries of government officials if they failed to come up with an action plan to prevent stubble burning, which triggers heavy pollution in Delhi-NCR.last_img read more

Movie review: Yeh Khula Aasmaan

first_imgYeh Khula AasmaanCast: Raghuveer Yadav, Raj Tandon, Anya Anand, Yashpal Sharma, Manjusha Godse, Kishor Nadalskar, Nitin KerurDirection: Gitanjali SinhaRating:  A teenager grapples with his no-show in academics. The pressure to qualify for IIT is killing him. Mom and dad are too busy to pay attention and the boy has no one to turn to.You get the familiar picture of urban crisis this film is trying to set up. It’s not really the first time that Bollywood has tapped the subject, and debutant Gitanjali Sinha tries narrating her coming-of-age tale with a retrospective twist. When life gets messed up on the fast lane, get far away from the maddening crowd. Head back to the village for a pep dose of self-discovery.Debutant Raj Tandon plays Avinash, the young hero of the film who is lonely, depressed and confused. The turnaround in his story comes when Avinash visits his Dadu, Gulab Rai (Raghuveer Yadav). The boy finds a support system in the grandfather. Realising Avinash’s problem is psychological, Dadu – a kite running champ in his heydays – decides to instil self-realisation in the boy using the sport as a template. The kite-flying metaphor used to unravel lessons on life, love, friendship and hope are, however, predictably drawn. That bit is a snag, as is the snail’s pace of the narrative. Yeh Khula Aasmaan could have been watchable fare had its makers worked at a tighter screenplay.Raj Tandon makes a fine debut, and Raghuveer Yadav’s Dadu is credibly essayed. The actors, though, can’t save the tedious show.advertisementlast_img read more

Residents Seek 27B from Hunters Point Cleanup Firm

first_imgAn attorney representing more than 38,000 residents from the neighborhood surrounding the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco filed a class-action lawsuit last week against Tetra Tech, the environmental engineering company alleged to have falsified soil samples during its cleanup of the site. The suit seeks $27 billion in damages to compensate for “past and future harm” the plaintiffs may suffer and to “punish defendants for the blatant, conscious, callous disregard of Bayview-Hunters Point residents’ lives, born and unborn, for the next five generations,” reported the San Francisco Chronicle. The Navy and the Environmental Protection Agency each issued reports earlier this year concluding that much of the data Tetra Tech collected from the Superfund site was flawed. The lawsuit “is factually incorrect and meritless,” the company responded. “We believe so strongly in the quality of our work that we have offered to pay for independent testing to demonstrate the false and misleading allegations, such as contained in this lawsuit, are wrong,” according to a statement from Tetra Tech. … Also last week, two former radiation control technician supervisors for Tetra Tech were sentenced to eight months in prison for falsifying records, reported NBC Bay Area. They previously admitted to switching clean soil samples with the soil they were supposed to have been testing in order to fake the results of the shipyard’s cleanup.San Francisco Chronicle photo by Santiago Mejia Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

Fortnite players can finally merge accounts but its complicated

first_img 27 Photos Tags 0 Fortnite: All the news and our weekly challenge guides.Video games: All of CNET’s gaming coverage. Fortnite Sony Nintendo Hilarious Fortnite memescenter_img Fortnite Creative will be available Dec. 6 for those with a Battle Pass.  Epic Games Have a Fortnite account on your PlayStation 4? You can finally merge it with your Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch or mobile account, GameSpot reports. But it isn’t easy. When Fortnite became one of the most popular games on the planet, Sony found itself with a problem. The PlayStation 4 version of the game existed in a walled garden — not only locking it off from online play with Xbox Live, PC and Nintendo Switch players, but forcing PS4 users to maintain a separate Fortnite account, too. Eventually, Sony relented and opened up multiplayer cross-play between PS4 players, and gamers on Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch — but the accounts were still separated. This meant that any progress made on the PS4 version of the game didn’t carry over to other platforms, including skin unlocks, Battle Pass progress or V-Bucks. Now, Fortnite’s publisher Epic Games has introduced an account merge tool that unifies all of your game progress across all platforms — giving you a single login for every version of Fortnite across PC, PS4, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch and mobile. Unfortunately, the process can take up to two weeks, and it’s a little cumbersome. screen-shot-2019-02-07-at-1-52-51-pm Screenshot by Sean Buckley/CNET Getting started is easy. Simply go to the Epic Games merge website and select a primary account. This is the main account that all other accounts will “merge” to — the account that will end up being the final, main account at the end of the process. Then, you’ll select the secondary account to merge, and Epic will begin the process of rolling the secondary account’s V-Bucks, skins and progress into the main account. The catch? That process takes about two weeks, and you will lose access to the secondary account during the process. There’s also a caveat: Merging is only available if at least one of the accounts was in use before Sept. 28, 2018, and, naturally, neither account can be banned or disabled. With a little patience, however, you could soon have all of your Fortnite victories housed in a single, unified account that can be used on every platform. And that’s all anybody wanted anyway. Share your voice Post a comment Video Gameslast_img read more
