Working in Clark County: Viktor Plyushchev, Beekeeper

first_imgBusiness is literally buzzing for Viktor Plyushchev, a third-generation commercial beekeeper in La Center. He doesn’t just keep a few hives of bees in his backyard and collect some honey to sweeten the occasional cup of tea as a hobby; rather, he’s managing millions of bees in more than 1,200 hives, half of which are in Clark County. Honey collection, the sweet serum that the bees work all of their lives to make, is only a small part of the business.Plyushchev is in the business of bee pollination. That is, the process of bees transferring pollen grains from the cells of fruit and veggie flowers so that crops flourish. He takes the bees he raises to pollinate crops near and far, from local blueberry crops, to apple and pear orchards in Wenatchee and Yakima, to almond fields in California most recently this spring.“If there are no bees, there’s no pollination. Yes, there are wild bees, but not so many,” Plyushchev said, adding that there has been a bee shortage nationwide for the last decade or so. If crop production declined, people would be forced to pay more money for food. “I mean, there could be a colony nearby somewhere in a hollow tree, but it could be miles away because the bees only cover up to like a three-mile radius.”His business, Smart Bee Pollination, brings in bees to help growers achieve the most bountiful crop possible. And maintaining successful beehives (each of which consists of one laying queen, hundreds of male drone bees and around 20,000 to 80,000 worker bees) to achieve this result is not an easy feat. Plyushchev’s immense love for the job doesn’t go unnoticed.“He definitely has a deep love for the honeybee,” said Debby Cochran, the special events and honeybee swarm coordinator for the Preservation Beekeeping Council, an organization based in Camas.last_img read more

Defendant lunges for officer’s gun in Oregon courtroom

first_imgNEWPORT, Ore. — Officials with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s office say a man tried to grab a police officer’s gun in a Newport courtroom this week and that a year-old federal appeals decision contributed to the near-disaster.The Oregonian/OregonLive reports a judge had denied a request by deputies to restrain 27-year-old Scott Lemmon in court Wednesday. In a scuffle caught on courtroom video, a man identified by authorities as Lemmon stands up and lunges for a gun worn by a Newport police officer sitting at the counsel table nearby. The officer turned away and a courthouse deputy tackled Lemmon to the floor.Authorities say this is the first case of a Lincoln County defendant grabbing for a gun since the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in 2017 to allow judges to decide if defendants are restrained when escorted into the courtroom.last_img read more

PeaceHealth joins Apple Health Records app

first_imgAdd Vancouver-based PeaceHealth to the list of local providers using Apple’s Health Records software.Health Records is part of the Apple Health app, which can be found on most iPhones. Health Records coordinates medical data from various providers into one space. That includes data on allergies, prior conditions, immunizations, lab results, medications, procedures and vital signs.Data are encrypted and also protected with a phone’s password and touch or face IDs. The program is also something patients have to opt into. If you choose to set up an account, you will receive notifications when the data is updated. Will Weider, senior vice president and chief information officer with PeaceHealth, said he thinks Health Records points toward the future of health care, where easy, on-demand access to patient information is becoming more important.“We’ve really been pushing greater patient convenience,” Weider said.Weider can speak to Health Records’ usefulness, as he recently took a spill during a bike ride in Las Vegas. He had to visit a local health care provider, and they asked if he was taking any medications. Weider just pulled out his phone and accessed his medical records through the app.“Your records come together in one place on your phone,” Weider said.PeaceHealth was officially added to Apple’s Health Records project in December, the same month the Vancouver health care provider acquired Portland-based Zoom+Care, which provides on-demand retail and digital care through the internet and neighborhood clinics. Zoom also focuses on a more modern approach to health care, allowing patients to schedule same-day appointments at Zoom locations through their phone or computers and chat with doctors online.last_img read more
