Open’s Training Camp A Success

first_imgWith just over six months until the 2011 World Cup in Edinburgh, Scotland, the camp was a good opportunity for all three squads to train together.Touch Football Australia’s Director of High Performance, Cathy Gray, was pleased with the way the weekend went, saying that the camp was very beneficial. “It was great having the three squads altogether, they said it was actually a very good vibe and we also invited a few of the young ones to fill in in the Women’s squad so I think that’s a plus because our program is just one group so they can fit in and have a run and see what it is like,” Gray said. “It was quite valuable to look at the fine tuning and who the next cull or taking some of the players to reduce it again and seeing how they go. They were all very focused and it was just what we needed before we go to the next stage.”The actual teams won’t be chosen until after the Elite Eight in March, but the camp gave the coaches the chance to work on their World Cup preparations. “The coaches, they’ve got their squads down to 19 or 20 so it’s now just looking at positions and now we’ve got an idea of who is actually committed to World Cup, so that was our first thing from the big squad. So they know who they are actually looking at and just sort of getting an idea of the positions. The Mixed have got to work out what their balance is going to be, are they taking 10 males and six females or what they are actually going to do and the positions. I think it’s just also to see who fits in the positions, your game plans, your skills, so it’s that next level. So you are training them really for World Cup and their moves and how they are going to play the game,” Gray said. Gray says she is happy with the weekend and the way the squads are progressing.“It was really good. Everything went really well, I think there is a really good professional culture now, players know what we expect and there are just minor things to iron out but all of these things just keep getting better and better.”last_img
